Youth ECHO’s ***End of School Bash!***

June 26th was Youth ECHO’s END OF SCHOOL BASH. The event was basically about catching our main target’s attention, to give them information about school–how important it is to finish high school and how to reenroll if they have dropped out–and to let them know what Youth ECHO was capable of doing. Youth ECHO’S goal is to get Red Hook teens in 7th- 12th grade to think critically about money and education and to urge them to Stay in School. ECHO members spent their time putting together 100 swag bags full of education information, tech decks, shirts with our logo and more. Later on that day Youth ECHO members were preparing for our event. There were many volunteers who joined us and helped. It was a busy day for everyone, from the raffle stand to the education stand, to the swag bag stand. The busiest places were the basketball tournament, the talent show sign up, and especially the food. We even had lots of last year’s Youth ECHO members to join us. Personally, Youth ECHO felt very strongly about their event and how it went. We thought it went great. The swag bags were gone very quickly and we had a lot of people sign up for the talent show. Everything went by smoothly until it started raining. Without hesitating, we packed our things and headed to P.S. 27 which was close to the park. We announced to everyone that we were heading to the school to continue the basketball tournament and talent show and they all came along!

Over the past few weeks of June, Youth ECHO members took their time creating videos about what fast money could possibly do. We came up with two scenes that are quite amusing, so please click on the link below and enjoy.

Presentation at Taxi

On May 5th, Youth ECHO and our fellow friends Archie Bell and Todd Triplett went on a trip back to Taxi NY to present our final presentation of our campaign. Wylie Kain and Mark Weintraub from Taxi were there to give us feedback on our campaign. Each of the members in Youth ECHO took a stage of the campaign and explained what each stage was about, and what we will be doing in the next few months of our campaign. Wylie and Mark thought it was a great idea. We came up with many different ways to reach out to youth in our community with our message, “Fast money is trash money.  Get it in now.  Get it back later.  Stay in School.”

I Live Here Like…

I live here like I was born to

Got the White and Blues chasing you

To much stress, can’t stand to be depress

Everyone trying to put you down

As if you was just a clown

Brooklyn, Red Hook Yup that’s my town

Trying to go places, leaving traces

I just don’t want any falls

So you know I got to stand up tall

Hate the hood to be the same

But people think is a game

Trip to the Tolerance Museum

It was as nice warm day of February 19Th when Youth Echo took a trip to the Tolerance Museum. We didn’t expect to see so much of racial and outstanding conflicts people get into. We were so shocked about so many things. We didn’t know how much people suffered to be who they are. It’s just so wicked –words are so powerful and can lead to so many things. We learned how words can be expressed in a bad way, for instance Hitler and his words led to so many disasters.  Martin L. King’s words led to so many good things in life. It’s what you say, how you say it and how it acts on it. The last activity that we did at the museum was a short documentary on people who are suffering at this very moment. It touched our hearts because there were so much families that were starving, who needed everything that what necessary, and to look at them was crazy because we felt blessed for having things we wanted and needed. At the end of the day we all realized what we are capable of doing. It was just a nice tour of the museum and we learned a lot. It was just a beautiful, moving day in the city with Youth Echo.

Urban Word

On February 3rd and 10th we had a visitor from Urban Word named K-Swift, who taught us quiet few things. He taught us how to express our feelings in different ways. He helped us come up with ways to see our surroundings with our five senses. K-swift was a nice and a very out minded guy. He gave us a few activities to do, which were poems. Then he performed one of his pieces he wrote, which was great. It felt as if it was real and it was happening at that very moment. Youth Echo asked him if the poem he rapped was real, and he replied “yes” and that what he been through was very hard for him. It was great of him to stop by and teach us a few things. He gave us a head start to really think and see Red Hook and Schools in many different ways.

Upcoming Events

During the month of January we’re having visits from Advocates for Children of New York, New York Civil Liberties Union, and youth organizing programs addressing education issues.

During the month of February, we’re planning to partner up with Urban Word on a series of workshops that will produce written pieces based on primary research on our schools

Trip to Taxi NY

On a snowy evening on December 16, we visited Taxi NY  in Tribeca, where Wylie Kain and Mark Weintraub gave a very funny, interactive presentation on how to design a marketing campaign. They showed us a few things they did for clients, like there was one issue about healthcare. They got volunteers to take pictures of themselves, which were made into naked statues that had statistics about health. So they put it all over streets to catch people’s attention. They said it was an interesting project for them and very successful.  They also showed us a commercial they did for Amp’ Mobil and it was so hilarious that we wanted to see it again. We asked a lot of questions on how we can catch people’s attention for our message. They gave us few ideas and we took it into consideration.
